The first video from our trialists has arrived in the shape of Phil Campbell’s film of his first impressions of the Canon HG10. In his inimitably frank and enthusiastic style, Phil takes us through a thorough inspection of the box-fresh camera.
Highlights include Phil casting aside the manual and saying he will rely on his intuition to work the camera – something many of us can identify with! Impressed with the compact design, he thinks the Canon HG10 would be great for someone travelling and likes the spacious 40 gig hard drive, although he also sensibly questions the tendency of camera manufacturers to mount their mics on the top, rather than the front, of a device.
Phil is pleased to find an HDMI cable in the box, but we should point out that this is a special ‘trialist pack’ and the HDMI cable is an optional accessory, not included with an‘off the shelf’ HG10 – we just like to give that bit more.
Overall, man and camera seem to hit it off admirably well. To see more of Phil’s first opinions head on over to his HG10 blip.tv channel to watch the full video, and let us and Phil know what you think.

Oh, the look of love in my eyes! – gotta love that!
Hey Phil,
Since you have both the HV20 and HG10 right now, I’d be interested to know what you think of the comparative 24P performance.
I’ve seen some really expressive video come from the HV20, and I’d like to know if the HG10 can achieve similar results.
the 24p performance is poor in comparison on the HG10 bill, i think because of the way the video is stored and compressed – this surprised me, as well as the lack of DV port which makes it no good for shooting a video.
I’ll do a side by side comparison thou for you bill so you can see for yourself.
