Canon has produced their 40 millionth EOS series SLR!

Engadget have covered the landmark and other previously significant numbers reached, and not only for the EOS-series either, there’s a mention of the shipment of their 100 millionth compact camera too, which happened during 2008.

Production of Canon’s EOS SLRs began in 1987 and took 10 years to reach the 10 million mark,

The EOS series, which stands for “Electro Optical System” and also carries the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn, was first introduced in March 1987 as a new generation of AF SLR cameras that incorporate the world’s first electronic mount system, achieving complete electronic control not only between the lens and body but throughout the entire camera system.” – Canon Press Release

Regarding the EOS SLRs it turns out that half of the 40 million now in existence are digital, which is pretty significant, and as Engadget say,

[…] given the state of film today, we’re guessing that the delta between the two will only grow larger in the future.”

Their also running a poll on the back of this news – Are you the proud owner of a Canon SLR? Be sure to head over to the article and select a radio button, and if you’re doing that why not let us know too if you’re a Canon user in the comments.

All that remains is to send a hearty congratulations to Canon! Good work.

The full press release can be seen at the bottom of the Engadget article.

Product makers and organizers of the competition, Kata, have been looking to find the ‘Dream Bag’ since November and are offering some amazing prizes for finalists. Kata say,

We believe that in opening this channel to the general public greater advantage is actually for you the photographers out there who never get heard and whose ideas can help us make products that meet your actual real needs.”

It isn’t just the winning designer who will get to walk away with some great Canon products (and of course their unique bag design made) the second and third place designers will also win a 7D complete with lenses and accessories.

Kata will be putting all applicants through an extensive judging process using online voters, Kata representatives and a panel of independent judges to help find the perfect camera bag.

Entrants have until March 1st to submit their designs.

This week Canon is sponsoring the Tuttle meet-up (the Social Media Café) taking place between 10am-1pm on Friday 27th November at LEON in Spitalfields.

The Tuttle Club was created by Lloyd Davis and sees those with a passion for social media get together and discuss over coffee the industry, emerging trends and where they see things going in the future. It’s usually a lively affair with something for everyone if you’re an online and social sort.

At Friday’s event Canon will be showcasing cameras from compacts to high-end Digital SLRs. If you have any questions, whether on the products being demonstrated or any Canon camera, the Canon UK team will be there and more than happy to help.

The meet-up is free to attend; you don’t even have to sign up, just arrive and enjoy the debate. You can follow the build-up to the event on Twitter with the hashtags #canontuttle and #tuttle, and if you what some more details just @canoncamerabuzz.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Oh, and your first coffee is on Canon.

It would be fair to say that Carlo Nicora was a big fan of the new Canon 5D Mark II camera. In fact, it may even be fair to say that he was a VERY big fan – and who can blame him when one takes a look at just some of the magnificent shots he produced.

Tweeting that “This camera is able to Create Light from the Darkness!!!!” and that “The Canon 5D Mark II is a SUPERB camera!” he goes on to describe a particular shot in great detail on his blog.

“On the South Bank I crossed these two guys, who were walking and smiling in a low red light. Usually my camera would have been away already, or it would have been suffering in the widest aperture and highest ISO setting”. But with Canon in hand, he gained permission for the shot and utilising skills along with technical wizardry, he “remained hit by the detail of the shot. To be a ISO 1600 I think this is stunning.”

Read his full post over here, take a look at all the pics here – or just marvel at a lo-res version of Carlo’s excellent portrait shot below.

What good are wonderful cameras if one can’t get out into the big wide world, and get snapping at inspiring, emotionally charged or beautiful images?

That’s why, last week, Canon invited a number of magnificent photographers from across the world wide web, to a ‘big day out’ to try out the Canon 5D Mark II camera – and shoot some magnificent images across London Town.

Visiting, amongst other places, the British Museum, the London Eye and Trafalgar Square – a whole heap of images were shot – and all of them can be seen in our official flickr group.

From battling the elements at Trafalgar Square (pictured courtesy of Phill Price), to the swirling colours of a gaudy carousel horse at dusk, do pop over to take a look at all the images over here – and let the artists know what you think.
